WANT TO DISAPPEAR INTO THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE BUT LIVE TO TELL
THE TALE?
Then
try the Coconut Triangle of Sri Lanka, where there are acres and
acres of verdant foliage, a great profusion of coconut palms and
the inviting waves
of the Indian Ocean. Secluded from the town of Marawila, and tucked
away from the main road, lies the Aquarius Sports Resort.
The
mock-Roman Villa architecture, the contrasting pastel décor
and the canopies of bougainvillea might remind you of a Gerald
Durrell story, and
the rustic charm and familiar atmosphere created by the friendly
staff will certainly endear this 40 roomed establishment to you.
In addition to the main open air Restaurant and main bar, you
will also find a beer garden and a pizzeria near the pool. There's
something happening every weekend - be it a fashion show, limbo
night, a disco, live band or even a special theme night such as
Banker's Night.
A
cyber café on the premises ensures that you won't lose
touch with home. Childcare can be arranged and there is always
a doctor on call.
One
of the many excursions you could take from here, includes suiting
up in diving gear and exploring the wreck of a World War II British
cargo plane, which is recommended as safe for beginners. You could
hire a boat and go out to sea, or go on a jungle boat trip down
the Kalu Ganga ('Black River') where you will see anything from
migrant birds to monitor lizards. The Munneswaram Hindu temple
is 20kms away, and can be combined with a tour to the famous fish
market at the seaside town of Chilaw.
The
Aquarius promotes fitness as a way to a longer, healthier life
and is the only resort in the country with an Astroturf indoor
stadium that can accommodate 4 badminton or tennis courts and
16 table tennis courts. The resort hosts an exchange programme,
and many foreign teams are often in residence here, conducting
workshops and swapping knowledge with local teams. You could also
try out archery, boccia, mini golf, water polo, beach soccer and
water gym. There is an Astroturf pitch, which is used for football
and hockey. A baby pool and animation from 10am - 6pm completes
the picture.
