ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SOUTH COAST HOTELS,
Bentota
Beach is still one of the finest and most popular hotels in the
country. A comprehensive watersports and entertainment facility
opened in 1995 and a major refurbishment in 1999 keeps the hotel
up there with the best of the new hotels on the coast.
An
advantage to being the first to build is the choice of location,
and it doesn't get much better than this site. Just over the bridge
that divides the central from the southern province, the hotel
spreads out in a green swathe between the wide Bentota river and
the ocean. The ocean-side offers as good a beach as you will find
anywhere in the country, while the river-side is ideal for all
the watersports offered by Club Intersport.
Apart
from the full list of watersports (plus diving and big game fishing),
Club Intersport boasts tennis, badminton and squash courts as
well as table tennis, snooker and archery. In fact, it's a whole
self-contained club with nightly entertainments (discos, karaoke,
films, stage shows) that will keep the young happily occupied
throughout their holiday.
As
the club is set apart from the hotel proper, it does not disturb
the overall calm atmosphere of the place. The large, green garden
offers guests plenty of privacy and the delightful 'rock pool'
style swimming pool is quieter than most.
The quality and style maintained by the hotel is evident the moment
you climb the steps to the lobby. The whole roof is furnished
with a remarkable Ena de Silva batik and the floor to ceiling
windows look onto a colonnaded courtyard pool and frangipani tree.
That is a trademark of the architect, Sri Lanka's finest, Geoffrey
Bawa. And that quality is maintained throughout the hotel, from
the first class service to the spotless rooms and the rightly
renowned cuisine.
