BLUE OCEANIC BEACH HOTEL IS THE MORE INFORMAL,
modern-looking
sister to the Royal Oceanic Hotel next door. Both hotels represent
the highest standards available in Negombo, but whereas the 'Royal'
appears more 'regal', the 'Blue' has the more relaxed look of
a Mediterranean resort.
The
dominant colours are blue and white, in many shades and variations,
such as white porcelain on blue tablecloths and white frangipani
flowers on azure blue tiles. The tables and chairs are low to
the ground; the walls are decorated with exceptional pieces of
handloom textiles and wooden sculptures.
The
same high standards of design are evident in the bedrooms, which
are unusually large even before you see the spacious balcony or
veranda. All the rooms look out to the beach and the sea just
a few metres away beyond the row of mature palms. All the 'mod
cons' are included as standard and the bathroom has enough space
for a separate shower and bath, which is appreciated by more than
a few.
The
staff will happily put in a third bed for children, as this is
a particularly child and family-friendly hotel. The special children's
corner, at one end of the building, is a colourful, cozy place
with lots to do both indoors and out. A trained child animator
is always on hand. Meanwhile, dad might take the opportunity to
get on the web at the Blue's own cyber café (or, just possibly,
work out in the gym). And mum might be enjoying a well-earned
massage and consultation at the Blue's own Ayurvedic Center.
The
beach at this point along the coast is broad, golden and fine
and, in season, the sea is as calm as a millpond. You can swim
and walk for miles without hassle or danger. Alternatively, there
is the hotel's own fine swimming pool, which is particularly popular
around lunch time as the pool restaurant, 'Centre Point', cooks
up superb pizzas and other snacks. At the weekend Centre Point
becomes the atmospheric venue for a disco.
Behind
this successful venture is a smiling and committed staff, which
is always trying out new things in and around the hotel. Nothing
is too much trouble for them but trouble is the last thing on
your mind in this fine hotel.
