A RENOWNED HOTEL FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS,
but
it can trace its heritage back to the early eighteenth century
when the Dutch built a small fortress at the entrance to Galle
Bay. In 1860 Captain Bailey of the P&O shipping line bought
the property and set about building one of the great residences
of the country. That period home romance is at the heart of the
hotel's charm today.
The
plentiful furniture is an array of mostly collectable antique
pieces. The original rooms are large, cool with high ceilings
and louvered doors. Wide verandahs with their columns lead out
to lawns and terraces and make a perfect setting for a Shakespearean
play.
Just
as impressive as the setting is the location itself. As is only
sensible for a defensive fortress, this raised spot has extensive
views in three directions out to sea. Westward the historic Dutch
Fort in Galle lends itself as a backdrop to a dramatic sunset.
Most
of the rooms are on two floors of a single wing that affords uninterrupted
views to the horizon. Indeed, this is one of the rare places that
you can enjoy the sea view while lying on your bed. The rooms
are comfortable, have air-conditioning and mini-bar facilities.
The Closenberg is sought after by tourists who appreciate and
savour the varied heritage of our country. Guests also have the
pleasure of the famous Unawatuna Beach just a few minutes away.
The Closenberg is very popular as a break from an outward journey.
