THE GOLDEN STAR IS A FAIRLY SMALL, LOW KEY, BEACH HOTEL,
popular
with Dutch holidaymakers and also some long-stay guests. The main
attractions here are the beach and the pool along with the pool
bar, which is conveniently located between the two.
The
hotel itself is built in a U-shape around the pool and restaurant.
Most of the 62 rooms have a terrace or balcony except for one
wing, and 90% of them are air conditioned.
Most
of the guests are on Half Board. There is a set menu for breakfast
and lunch, with dinner buffet three times a week, including a beach
barbecue once a week, which is popular with the guests. A calypso
band plays during dinner and twice a month there is a live band,
with dancing on the beach. But most of the time it's a quiet sort
of place, and guests are left to relax, swim and sunbathe. In keeping
with the quiet atmosphere the daytime entertainment is focused on
gentle indoor games such as carom or darts. There are a couple of
artists and craftsmen with woodcarvings, who display their work
under the trees, and a jewellery shop is inside the hotel.
The
hotel also has a conference/ballroom, which can be used for seminars
or meetings and is often used for local weddings. Things tend
to get busier at weekends when families from Colombo arrive to
spend the day by the pool.
