IF YOU ARE THE TYPE OF PERSON WHO LIKES TO GET A LITTLE CLOSER
to
the local scene than the average visitor, you'll enjoy Hotel Sunset
Beach. The hotel is the first on the whole Negombo strip and this
corner position allows guests to look out onto and, indeed, join
in with (if that is their wish) local everyday life. This might
mean watching the fishermen on the beach draw in their catch or
it might mean joining in a neighbourhood game of beach volleyball
or cricket. With no other hotel in sight, there is a pleasing
sense of being away from the large holiday groups.
A
small grass verge and a line of coconut palms are all that separate
the hotel from the beach. The hotel's main bar is on the beach;
it's restaurant looks out to the beach on two sides. Guests naturally
spend their days out of doors, mostly on the beach or by the pool,
which is just behind the line of palm trees. With the beach bar
also acting as a snack bar and general shady spot, it's a lovely
place to sit out the mid-day hours or enjoy a drink at sunset
and chat to a few fellow guests.
Every
room in the hotel faces the ocean, though the views from the second
and third floor balconies are particularly good. Each room is spacious
and simply but tastefully furnished. There isn't any air conditioning,
but a fan and the breeze coming straight off the sea makes it unnecessary.
In
every way this is a hotel that enjoys its proximity to the sand
and sea and to its neighbours. The excellent manager and staff
are always on hand to help and advise. For example, if you visit
around January 20th, you will catch the biggest day of the year
for the local fishing community, the celebration of
St. Sebastian's feastday.
