Kandalama

NESTLED INTO A ROCKY OUTCROP AT THE EDGE OF A FOREST

with panoramic views of water and hills, Kandalama is a model of modern, ecological design. Year after year it becomes more and more a part of its own natural setting, with wild grasses, trees and vines growing luxuriantly on and around the building.

The accompanying management commitment to a green policy is recognised with several international awards and certificates. Conservation, minimum usage and recycling are key strategies, combined with social and cultural interaction with neighbouring communities.

Placed, as it is, in the center of the cultural triangle, all the renowned sites of Sri Lanka's ancient civilization can be taken in on day-trips. Some of the country's fine wildlife sanctuaries are also nearby - particularly impressive are the wild elephant herds of Giritale and Minneriya.
One day at least, leave the vehicle in the car park and take a trek with the hotel's resident naturalist. Millenia old meditation caves with frescoes and inscriptions
are within striking distance through the forest. Or you may prefer a slow walk trying to identify as many of the 160 resident bird species as possible. Or how about an elephant ride along the bank of the great Kandalama Tank?

If a swim at the end of the day doesn't relieve your aches, an ayurvedic massage and steam bath surely will. In tune with the hotel's natural theme, the ayurvedic center is a serious undertaking. Mind you, so too is the swimming! There are three pools, each with glorious views over the trees to the lake and beyond.

Similar spectacular views can be enjoyed from the main restaurant - there can be no finer accompaniment to the hotel's first class cuisine. After fine dining, a drink in the stylish bar, with an ear to the classical music performance and then off to your room - and maybe just catch that in-house movie before a welcome sleep.
