ON THE LAKE ROAD, FACING THE WATER,
this
small and relatively new hotel promises personalised service plus
the benefits of a location that is close enough to all the attractions
of Kandy. The wide ground floor veranda and giant graceful columns
at the front add a quaint colonial touch to this modest and modern
four-storeyed building.
Along
with the western tourists, many Sri Lankans favour the place for
its unpretentious ways and homely basic comforts provided at moderate
and negotiable prices. You get the best deal here as individual
travellers.
The
rooms are a good size, providing all basic comforts and most have
attached balconies. Only seven of the rooms have air-conditioning,
but the others do quite well with ceiling fans. Big, colourful
appliqué wall hangings make the lounges cheerful.
The
air conditioned rooftop bar serves authentic Japanese food and
has karaoke three times a week. There's another bar at the ground
floor restaurant where all three meals are served, mainly à
la carte. If you come from a beach hotel and its buffets, this
may be very welcome.
During
the wedding season (late April to October) you may chance upon
a traditional and colourful ceremony, as this is a popular spot
for local weddings. The receptions are held at the main restaurant
and in the first floor coffee lounge. The two together can accommodate
about 200 people.
The
place can be a good base for going on excursions planned perhaps
with help and advice from the management. Or you may just roam
around the city - most historical sites and evening cultural programmes
are within walking distances. The hotel next door has a swimming
pool where you can spend some leisurely time for a small fee.
