LYING AMIDST THE SLOPING HILLS OF KANDY - THE LAST STAND OF THE
SRI LANKAN
(then
Ceylon) king - Le Kandyan rises from the bedrock on which it lies:
majestic in all its Kandyan finery. Decorated in the traditional
Kandyan colours of red, yellow and black, every corner holds a
piece of work from the rich historical past of the town, beautifully
incorporated into the layout of the hotel. The massive, carved
columns that once held up a castle roof now decorate the front
lobby, and locally significant murals, flags and carvings now
decorate the passageways and rooms.
Looking from the wide lobby, that is all but open to the elements,
you can only see rock and trees and, in the distance, misty mountains.
The hotel, uniquely designed on to the rock face, is a seven-elevational
edifice - each level offering a unique view of the vista below.
Waiters
in Kandyan garb serve traditional Sri Lankan food at the 'Rasa
Wasala' restaurant. There is also a tea room that serves over
forty varieties of tea, and two bars for a variety of alcoholic
fare.
Four
suites with additional mini bar and loft, and plenty of standard
rooms with central air-conditioning, bath and cable television
are on offer. Every room has its own private balcony over looking
some spectacular scenery.
If
you are wondering what you could do here, there is a lovely bird
watching trek to Hantana sanctuary. Whilst in-house there is a
fitness center offering gym facilities and a squash court and
ayurvedic center. Fridays and Saturdays see the 'Le Garage' nightclub
in action - it really does look like an old garage with bits of
metal from old vehicles used as décor, with barrels as
tables. Its also a good opportunity to meet some locals, as it's
a popular local night spot.
