THE FIRST FIVE STAR PROPERTY OUTSIDE COLOMBO.
Twenty
years on, it still bears all the hallmarks of a hotel in the top
rank: wonderful location, exquisite design, proper maintenance
and a committed staff, from top to bottom. Surrounded on three
sides by dense coconut groves, the hotel looks straight out onto
a pristine beach and the blue ocean beyond. Designed by Sri Lanka's
premier architect, Geoffrey Bawa, there are breathtaking views
from just about anywhere you care to stand or sit. The internal
décor is equally impressive - all light, calm and clear
- decorated with pieces of fine traditional furniture and works
of art by two of the best national artists.
Every room has a view to the sea and a large balcony or terrace.
The ceilings are high and the windows are just as high, flooding
the room with warm orange light in late afternoon. There are two
distinct wings. One is designated as the active wing, while the
other is for those whose priority is quiet. All the rooms have a
satellite television and a fully stocked minibar.
Many
of the guests at the Triton today are on all-inclusive packages.
They not only enjoy the luxury of a five star property but they
also benefit from dedication of a five star management. The animation
and entertainment program is fun and well thought out, the excursions
are well organised and the special dining events are mouth watering
(from a river safari with Champagne breakfast to a gala lobster
buffet on the beach).
Understandably,
the Triton is the most popular hotel in the country for weddings.
Not only are the surroundings so special, but the staff have unequalled
experience in making it all work perfectly - from the paperwork
before arrival to the spectacular elephant ride through the lobby!
