UNAWATUNA IS A GLORIOUS BAY JUST SOUTH OF GALLE.
A
white dagaba sits on a rocky outcrop looking back over a golden
beach that curves away into the distance; a green forest of coconut
palms is the backdrop to this classic picture postcard. A number
of guest houses and restaurants front the shoreline, but, most
surprisingly, Unawatuna Beach Hotel is the only hotel in the neighbourhood.
Indeed, it has it's own entrance road, distinct from the other
main road, though the beach links everyone.
The
hotel began life in 1981 as a discreet ten room property. It seemed
to emerge organically from the surrounding fishing village. And
it has kept its local roots even as it expanded to the present
60 rooms. Local materials and techniques are used extensively,
such as the thatch above the reception and the palm woven mats
that cover ceilings, cupboards and wardrobes. Constant maintenance
ensures it all remains in good condition. At the end of 1998 the
whole hotel was fully refurbished and the resort was developed
on the theme of a fishing village resort.
There
is a special atmosphere to Unawatuna that has something to do
with being 'beyond' the tourist hotel strip that finishes at Hikkaduwa
and Galle. This is a relaxed place where it's easy to make new
friends or bump into old ones. It's the sort of place you could
spend two weeks and wonder where the time flew. The UBR, as it's
affectionately known, fits in perfectly. The atmosphere is fully
relaxed, though behind the scenes the management is making sure
that all the 'fun' goes to plan. Daily Happy Hours, Theme Nights
with Piano Bar, Beach Parties, Live Music as well as a diving
Club and a live sports channel at the Bar will keep you entertained
throughout the week.
